July 21 - Frieda Anderson

July's program features national speaker, Frieda Anderson.

Frieda made her first quilt while in high school.  In college she majored in Art History but returned to fiber because it was more satisfying.  For years her focus was on designing and making clothing, but that changed in 1992 when she realized all she wanted to do was make quilts.  Since then she has been designing and making original art quilts.  Frieda gets much of her inspiration for her designs from nature, from the woods surrounding her home.  About 20 years ago, she discovered hand dyeing and now works almost exclusively with her own dyed cottons and silks.  Frieda will teach a workshop during the day on the 21st at Fun to Sew in Moore.  The class is sold out!  Come join us at the evening guild meeting to meet Frieda and see her wonderful works of art.

May 19 - Patti Nethery presents the Ruler Revolution

Patti Nethery-Starr, owner and inventor of Ruler Revolution quilting rulers, is our featured speaker and will demonstrate her ruler inventions.  From Texas, Patti was introduced to quilting in 1999.   As she progressed in quilting, she learned various quilting tips and techniques.  Her favorite was drawing a grid on fat quarters, sewing long straight lines, then cutting apart the fabric and viola -- half square triangles!  When teaching this grid technique to any quilter wanting to learn, she kept thinking how much easier it would be if someone just invented a ruler to draw the grid.

Eventually she did just that - designed and developed the 24 in 24 ruler, so named because you can get 24 half-square triangles in about 24 minutes (or less).  She wanted the ruler to be multi-purpose, so in addition to the 24 half square triangles, you can also use this same ruler to make 96 smaller half square triangles, plus quarter-square triangles, and several other units, too.

While developing the 24 in 24 ruler, she realized the same technique of "sewing big pieces of fabric together first, then cutting apart finished units" could be applied to other common quilting blocks -- and other ruler designs came to mind.  As they say, the rest is history.  In 2010 she applied for several patents associated with these ruler designs and has been issued three patents with others still pending.

A companion workshop will be held on Tuesday, May 20, at Fun to Sew in Moore, OK.  Cost is $45 for the class and kit.  To register for the workshop, call Fun to Sew at 405-794-6900.

April 21 - Michelle Watts

Join us on April 21 at 7:00 for our April guild meeting.  Our featured guest speaker is Michelle Watts, whose program is titled "From Design to Quilt".  Michelle will also host a day-long workshop that day teaching her workshop "Wheel of Scraps".   You can check out a picture of Michelle's quilt at her website, under the workshops and lectures tab.  Workshop Supply List

This is another scrap reduction class that is excellent for getting rid of a few of the scraps you have laying around. These are big blocks. Make one block for a wall hanging or three blocks for a larger quilt. Scrap borders can also be added. Students will work on one circle during class. Michelle will discuss other designs and layout options.

Space is available.  Contact Carolyn Miltiadou (she's in the directory) to sign up for this class.
