January 20, 2014: Darcy Ashton

Oklahoma's own Darcy Ashton will be the guest speaker at the January 20th guild meeting, showcasing her designs and quilts.  Darcy will also hold a workshop that day from 9:00 to 4:00 teaching her design, "Pigs in a Blanket".  The cost for the class is $20 plus $8.50 for the pattern, and you can still enroll by contacting  Carolyn Miltiadou or Vicki Borycki.  To obtain the supply list, just click on the link below:

December 16, 2013 - December Christmas Pot Luck

The annual Christmas pot luck is Monday, December 16, starting at 6:00 p.m. rather than the regular meeting time of 7:00 p.m.  Meat and drinks are provided by the guild, so bring a side dish or dessert.  Back by popular demand, we'll be exchanging two potholders, so bring these wrapped.  Also, for the /Left/Right story game, bring a wrapped quilt/sewing related gift (around $10.00) for exchange.  Both gift exchanges are optional, so if you don't have time to make some potholders or shop, just come and join the fun anyway.  See you Monday!

November 18 - Demo Derby

November's guild meeting will be the annual Demo Derby.  Come and see demos on quilting shortcuts, tips and tricks!  December's meeting will be the annual Christmas pot luck, starting at 6:00 at McFarlin.  Gift exchange of quilt-related item around $10.00, as well as two pot holders for exchange.  Be sure to write your name and date on the pot holders so the recipient will know who made them.    Holiday season is upon us!

October 21 - Barbara Baker Trunk Show

Barbara Baker will present the trunk show previously scheduled in May.  Barbara was prepared to show her quilts after a day-long workshop, but the May 21st tornado pre-empted her show!  Barbara is an excellent quilter who taught at Patchwork Place, and who coordinates the Patches Clubs at Catering Creations.  She also assisted with the construction of our 2014 raffle quilt.

August 19 - Picnic in the Park Quilt Challenge

Our next guild meeting will feature the "Picnic in the Park" quilt challenge.  No, we won't be having an actual picnic, but will have a mini quilt show to showcase the quilts or other items those participating in the challenge have created.  Everyone present will receive tickets to vote on their favorites.  Winners will be awarded with ribbons and cash prizes for first, second and third place!  This challenge was established to raise money to offset the missing Ways and Means table the first half of the year, and to give an opportunity for members to enter quilts into a "non-threatening" mini quilt show.  Join the fun in August.  Can't wait to see what everyone's creativity will bring!

We will NOT have an official workshop on the 19th, but will be using Fenn Hall from 10:00 to 4:00 to work on Disaster Relief quilts.  Bring your sewing machines to work on your projects.  We'll have a few kits for you to work on if you don't have one of your own.  We may need to tie some of the pieced tops, and if so, we'll have work stations set up and supplies for quilt tying.  See you in August!

July 29 - Special Community Projects Work Day

Norman Neighbors in Need, a task force of Norman Area Quilters Guild, will meet again on the 29th  to work on quilts for the Disaster Relief project.   All community members are welcome to join us.   Please bring your sewing machines for a day of working on quilt tops.  We'll have kits for the 10-minute (bow-tie) block quilts if you need something to work on.   We'll also having batting we can cut for those of you who can quilt the pieced tops.    Lunch is provided for $5.00.  Thank you, Kim, for generously donating your work room for us!

July 15 - Debbie Maddy

Debbie Maddy

June 17 - NAQG Birthday Party!

We're celebrating the 10th anniversary of the Norman Area Quilters Guild, so come join us for a party.  We'll have a panel of some of the charter members of the guild, and great show and share time, and, of course, good refreshments worthy of a birthday party!  The party starts at 7:00 p.m. at McFarlin Methodist Church.   Be sure to bring 1-2 finished quilts or quilt tops from a class you've taken anytime in the past sponsored by NAQG.   See you there!

May 20 - Barbara Baker

Barbara Baker is our guest speaker for May, who will be doing a trunk show for the evening program.  Many of you know Barbara as a teacher for Patchwork Place, and as the coordinator of the ongoing Patches Clubs here in Norman.  Barbara will also teach a day class from 9:00 - 4:00, on Debbie Maddy's  Labyrinth pattern. 
To sign up for this class, contact Sharon Dries.  Cost for the class is $20 plus purchase of the pattern if you don't already have it.


We'll be making the lap size (58" x 58") in classs, or you may work on any of the sizes listed in the pattern (lap through king).  The supply list  for all the sizes,  and cutting instructions are linked below.  The cutting insstructions are those Barbara teaches, so be sure to pre-cut your fabrics using her guidelines, not the ones listed on the supply list.  This is a beautiful quilt designed by Debbie Maddy and uses no Y-seams!  Barbara will have patterns for sale in the class, but please let Sharon know if you want to take the class ASAP so we can have enough patterns for everyone.

April 15: Charlotte Hickman


Charlotte Hickman has always been a fiber enthusiast using both yarns and fabrics.  Since her retirement from school teaching and administration, she has become completely addicted to the world of quilting.  Charlotte lectures and teaches workshops on fabric painting, dying, piecing and appliquéing techniques. She is also an experienced, award-winning quilter and educator, specializing in art quilts. Her quilts are meticulously sewn and quilted on her home domestic sewing machine.  Charlotte will present a truck show at our evening meeting, and will host a workshop on her pattern, “Irisis”, using machine applique techniques.  To enroll in the workshop, contact Sharon Dries, Program Chair

March 18, 2013: Susan Masters

Susan Master will be the presenter at the March guild meeting.  Susan is a 4th generation quilter who designs quilts and teaches at Sooner Quilts in Guthrie and at Bernina of Oklahoma City.  Susan holds a Masters of Arts in Design and Production from Baylor University and continued her studies at Yale and the La Romita School of Art in Terni, Italy.  She has won numerous ribbons at quilt shows and belongs to many regional quilt guilds.  She is the 2003 winner of the Teaching Scholarship from the Ogallala Quilter's Society.  Her business, Texas Prairie Quilts, currently publishes over 15 patterns including her new Folded Facets Design Series.

To encourage members to read the blog, the guild board voted to give an extra door-prize ticket to members who have found the secret phrase and to tell it to the Vice-President, Judith Clark, who hands out door prize tickets.  For March, the secret phrase is "Irish Eyes Are Smiling".  Be sure to state this phrase to Judith at the March guild meeting to receive an extra door prize ticket!

January 21, 2013: "Applique Your Quilt" by Joan Boehrer

Remember to bring 3 yards of red, white and blue fabric for the "Picnic  in the Park" contest in August.  Anyone wanting to participate should bring three 1-yard cuts of fabrics in red, white and blue.  Ideally, you would bring one yard in each color, but if you only have one or two of the colors in your stash, then just double up on them.  In February, we'll bring fabric packs of red, white and blue for guild members to purchase for $15.00 (All proceeds go into the general program funds).  Members purchasing packs are to use these fabrics and may add one more yard of their choosing to make a quilt or other item(s).  At our August general meeting, we'll display all the items and have members present vote on their favorites.  Prize money will be awarded to first, second and third place.  Start thinking of patterns you want to use for your "Picnic in the Park" contest quilt.
